About the Bakery
Publication Studio is a laboratory for publication in its fullest sense — not just the production of books, but the production of a public. –Matthew Stadler
The Book Bakery is properly known as Publication Studio Toronto, an outpost of the original Publication Studio in Portland, Oregon (more about PS through the link). The Book Bakery produces special book projects by artists and writers and publishes them in limited-edition, print-on-demand runs. It also desires to produce jewelry, artist multiples, and other delicious doodads. At its heart it’s an art project, a not-for-profit experiment in sustainable publishing. It is located in the heart of Toronto’s Parkdale neighbourhood; its goods and goodies are sold online at the Publication Studio site (and soon, here too, on our dedicated website).
The Book Bakery makes whatever sorts of books it deems to be delicious: fiction, non-fiction, memoirs, manifestos, travel guides, monographs, whatsits, and whatnots. The books are edited and designed in-bakery, then produced there as well: the Bakery team prints them, trims them, and binds them. Books from the Bakery are stamped with an official Bakery logo, dated, and embossed with an official Publication Studio embosser.
Some books are published in unlimited runs; some, in very limited-editions. When a book is sold out, it’s sold out for good. The look of the books and the sizes of the editions are determined in close consultation with the artists and writers who first created them. The Bakery encourages these folks to don bakers’ hats and help out with production: the book you buy may have been creased by the artist who conceived of it.
The objets to be offered by the Bakery — jewelry and other dazzling doodads — will be collaborations between the Bakery and an array of talented artisans and visual artists. Produced in workshops and ateliers across the city, the objets will be packaged and sold exclusively by the Bakery. They, too, will come in editions of differing sizes. Get ’em while they’re hot.
The Book Bakery does not accept unsolicited submissions or proposals, so please don’t send them.
